A little insight into my passion for squash.
I had a long career where I represented Wales over 100 times, some matches at number one for the team, won some titles, including the Dutch Open, but lost the Welsh Open final eight years in a row! Now that takes some doing! I seem to remember one year I was 2 games up and 8-0 love with match point and lost 10-8 in the fifth! A Classic Rees performance!
Playing for Wales, representing your country, pulling on that red jersey is one of the best experiences of my life. But finding a youngster and coaching them through from beginner to playing for Wales, watching them develop skills and tactical maturity is better.
Squash is gladiatorial, dynamic, physically demanding and mentally challenging. It’s like chess on legs. It teaches you about strategy, tactics and movement. An ideal grounding for a political career!
It’s the only racket sport where players share the same space.
It is a sport for life. Children as young as 4 are taking up squash and there is a Masters Circuit with championships in many countries and World and European Championships.
Wales men became the over 70 World Champions! All skill, trickery and bandages but not much movement! Many people are surprised to learn that squash is not an Olympic sport. Many assume that it has been in the Olympics for many years. Sadly this is not the case.
