Christina Rees MP, Labour’s Shadow Welsh Secretary, commenting on the result of the Tata Steel UK workforce ballot, said:
“This has not been an easy decision for steelworkers and their families, but today’s announcement is an important step forward in securing the future of the steel industry in Wales. It is a testament to the work put in by all the unions involved, and the commitment they have shown to their members during these difficult times.
“This decision also reflects the support the Welsh Government has provided in order to maintain steel jobs and production in Wales. The Tory Government at Westminster must now demonstrate the same commitment to this crucial industry. We will continue to press them to urgently tackle the UK’s high energy costs, not just for Tata but for the whole steel sector and wider energy intensive users, and to recognise the steel industry in their new Industrial Strategy.”
